I can see that it is perfectly taken. It seems that the setting is just a simple one yet it had been made beautifully by the photographer.

Re: Minus the Action by Drew Angerer

Judges Comments:
Drew – Some beautiful images in the mix here and a nice edit. I love that you chose to approach this story from a different angle that also capitalizes on your strengths as a photographer. Technically, the images and toning are very strong. You fall into a pattern of using certain visual tools (some would call them gimmicks, but they have their uses) like the silhouette when I know you are capable of making images that have deeper meaning. This sort of story is good to show a publication what you can do at an event and to make some eye-candy but I’d love to see you delve into a story that you really care about. Looking forward to seeing what you produce this year.

Re: Minus the Action by Drew Angerer

JUDGES COMMENTS:

Drew, what a great idea and way to take the nonobvious track. I think this story was highly developed, well thought out, well photographed and a really well done project. I love it in black and white.

I'd like to see more of the cheerleaders, fans and even small time play-by-play announcers. Also vendors could be nice to round this out. I might even like to see a huge wide angle overall of one of these little stadiums during halftime as the teams are streaming off the field. These aren't necessary but could be fun additions.

The only point I see as lacking is strong editing and pacing. You really need to pare this down to get it to its best presentation. There are some redundant images (the silhouettes are repetitive), a few similars and the blurred action shots are one right after the other which could have been separated to give visual variety to the pacing.

Either way, you took a banal story and made it your own. It's a great way to illustrate how good photographs can be found in your back yard. Nice job!

Look into Ken Kobre's Photojournalism book about editing a photo story or better yet, have some of your peers (photo or not) look at the story and say to them, "Pick your favorite 5 images."
