What is more unfortunate to see is how the legal system keeps absorbing this kind of illegitimate behavior. Companies hire legal contractors. Contractors hire illegal workers. Companies know it all but they act blind. These people work their days and night off for as low as half of that what is earned by a legal worker. If the person even gets that; hes more than happy with it. But numerous cases can be seen on daily account when such people are not even provided what they are promised to. Fear of the police am immigration system refrains them to report such incidents. I believe something must be done to prevent such acts.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

kool

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

What an ironic title for the photo "Nonexistent". There is so much existing in that photo. It says so much. Someone may see empty hands somehow Steph you show a photo of overflowing hands. The subjects faces are obscured in interesting ways which makes many of the images powerful. The thing I like the most though, is that their hands tend to be the focus of the image. This is interesting to me because: they use their hands to do their work; their hands therefore represent ... Read Moretheir livelyhood; their work is all we ever see of most of them, so in essence by showing what they do we can get a sense of who they are and what they do. Just a rough sketch of a review, but if I have the time I might dig deeper....

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

Judges Comments:
Stephanie – A lot of beautiful images in the mix and what looks like the start of a nice project. Your ability to convey a mood is well developed and a strength you should build on. What needs work is the narrative. I understand that you are trying to push home the fact that these immigrants are invisible, but it is possible to show that in a compelling way without making each image anonymous. After a while the images tend to become redundant, hitting the same note when you need to create a rise and fall within the piece, like a song, if that makes any sense. Instead of perpetuating the anonymity give voice to the voiceless. You succeed in showing what you describe but take it a step further and make the viewer feel what it is like to be invisible. The images are great – use them as a foundation to build upon with this project.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

Judges Comments:
Stephanie – A lot of beautiful images in the mix and what looks like the start of a nice project. I love the mix of religious imagery with the "funky" posters and the scenic picture. I think it reveals something personal about your subjects, something intimate like the role of religion in their everyday or their idea of a beautiful landscape. Also, the mix makes me think of the age range of the people you were working with.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

You really did a wonderful job at capturing the ghost-like presence of your subjects. It's a quiet, almost surreal presence. I know they're there, mainly because you show their work and the results of their work, but they truly are ghosts, silent subjects that are so easily forgotten as we go about our lives and handle the products of their work.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

I think this is a great image to start the essay off with. Hands are such a defining feature and, with this worker, you can tell a lot about him from his hands without ever having to see his face. Also, something that distinguishes the subjects of this story from many legal workers is their willingness to work with their hands, to do jobs that many consider menial, but that are at the very basis of our economic system.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

Stephanie,
Awesome shot. This is certainly something that I want to continue. Personally, I just can't stop thinking about the workers. It would be interesting to expand to different places and products. And, you right documenting them during the busy season would be key. I chose black and white because I really believe that it helps sets the tone and adds to the mystery that I feel the piece has. When I started working on it, I knew very early on that I wanted it to be b&w. Thanks again.

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

Your photo is marked nonexistent. I felt that this is a not-so-glamorous topic and as a result it hasn't been brought to the public's attention. Maybe I'm being ignorant, but I had no idea about these circumstances until I saw this story. Great work Steph!!! Do you know if there is anything being done to improve this situation?

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

JUDGES COMMENTS:

I'd agree with Panos that this is a really covered story. Yet, I applaud anyone who actually attempts it since access is really hard to get. Once you get that access though, I'd keep pushing for more and more. I see this story as mid-way finished in my mind. There are a lot of scenic shots in here that could be filled in with really gripping people images. There is so much that can be done with this and could be an on-going career long process. You've got onion farmers for example but you're so close to New England I'd try to hit the folks who are out planting crops for the summer right now, then find the workers who migrate south during the summer to find crops, then move to harvesters in the fall (cranberries, apples, maple syrup, etc). There is a whole system of workers who just move up and down the coast finding the next crop. This could be one of those long term stories that becomes a grant project to keep finding them.

I don't mind at all that you can't see faces. I think that this story is supposed to be anonymous and in the shadows. I think the black and white makes it more so but honestly, I'd really like to see this in color too at some point. What was your motivation for making it B&W?

I also enjoy the description and how much time you put in writing it. It shows that you know the subject well and are going to be able to find other cool photographic opportunities because you are well aquainted with all the facets.

I think this is well done and should be continued to be explored. You can do great things with this, Steph!

Re: Nonexistent by Stephanie Makosky

good work
